Direct to Garment (DTG)
Direct to Garment (DTG) printing is a modern printing technique that uses inkjet technology to print full-color designs directly onto fabric, typically cotton-based garments. Unlike traditional screen printing, which requires separate screens for each color, DTG allows for highly detailed, photorealistic images with unlimited colors and gradients. This method works by applying water-based inks directly to the fabric, which are then absorbed and cured using heat to create a soft, long-lasting print. Because DTG prints directly onto the material without thick ink layers, the result is a smooth, breathable finish that maintains the natural feel of the fabric.
When does DTG make sense for me?
DTG printing is ideal for small-batch or one-off custom prints since it does not require setup costs or screens, making it a cost-effective choice for on-demand production. It excels at producing intricate designs with fine details, shading, and complex color variations that would be challenging with other printing methods. However, DTG works best on 100% cotton or high-cotton blend garments and performs optimally on lighter-colored fabrics. While it offers high-quality results, DTG may not be as cost-efficient as screen printing for large production runs due to longer print times per garment. Nonetheless, its ability to produce detailed and colorful prints with minimal setup makes DTG a popular choice for custom apparel businesses, print-on-demand services, and small-scale personalized merchandise.
